Back to School – with all the emotions

How?? How is it already the end of August? The summer has been lovely and I’m celebrating the end of it before I slink into my absolute favourite season of Autumn.
When my kids were younger this time of year was referred to as ‘The season of new pencil cases and new boots’ – pencil cases for them (amongst many other things) and new boots for me!
To me, the first of September feels like a new beginning, a fresh start, a time to take up new things – also, you know the Hogwarts Express leaves at 11am so it’s a sure sign school is starting back 😅
Joking aside it can also be a tough time for us.
It might be a time of big changes in your family. If you have children they could be starting pre school, changing schools or leaving for college and that changes your role.
When my son (my youngest child) went to college it took me a full year to adjust. For twenty years my days had revolved around school hours. Once they came home my time was spent ferrying them to activities, making dinner, homework, finding out they had a project due the following day, even though they had known about it for a week…….. I’m sure you know how it is.
Then suddenly no one was coming home.
My days off work were staring at me, I had plenty to do but I couldn’t make myself do anything in the afternoons. It took ages to be comfortable with the fact that If I chose to drive to Cork (an hour and 15 minutes away) at 2pm I could. There was no rush to get back but it just felt so wrong!
When I journaled on this what came up was:
If I’m not a mum then what am I?
Obviously I am still a mum, but my role had dramatically changed.
I was questioning my value and that is a bigger issue then I had realised.
If you find yourself going through any of those feelings then use your journal to get them out of your head.
Come over to my private Facebook group where you will find a list of prompts for this exercise.
If you’ve come over from LinkedIn then welcome! I’d love to see you in the group.
